I grew up with Volkswagens. There was a “Dinky” from the 1950s that I don’t have any real memories of. But I remember driving a newer mid-60s Beetle home from the dealership with my dad. A Microbus joined the Beetle. These cars were subsequently replaced by: a Squareback; an obscenely bright-green Dasher; a Scirocco; a 1974 Sunbug (a gold-colored Super-Beetle with a sunroof); and my first new car: a 1984 Jetta. When I saw these VW Bugs at a recent collector’s car show, it was the first time a strong wave of nostalgia hit me for a vintage car.
