The President’s Birds

No, not the feathered kind. I mean bird as in whirlybird, referring to a helicopter. The helicopters that fly the President of the United States around in support of his daily activities are the special mission of an elite group of U.S. Marines.

As luck would have it, I was on a Circle Line cruise around New York City on Oct. 18, 2012, when President Obama flew in to attend a dinner. The Circle Line ship passed by the Downtown Manhattan Heliport along the East River shortly after he arrived. I got these shots using a  Nikon P7000, an advanced point and shoot with a maximum telephoto range of 200mm.

(Note: the Circle Line cruise was a special all-photographers event organized by B&H Photo in NYC and sponsored by Lexar. It was  dubbed the “Moose Cruise” because it was led by photographer Moose Peterson.)

You’ll notice there are two helicopters. Whichever one the President is on is “Marine One.”  The other one is a decoy.
